HAMILTON, ONT. – Canadian Institute of Steel ion (CISC) president and CEO Keanin Loomis is stepping down from the role this summer as he aims to become Hamilton’s next mayor.
He wrote in a LinkedIn post he is running in the city’s next municipal election, which takes place Oct. 26. This is his second time vying for the position, as he ran in 2022 in a close race between current mayor Andrea Horwath.
“Meeting CISC members across the country, I was able to see firsthand the strength, resilience and innovation that defines this sector — one that builds our nation’s vital infrastructure and strengthens communities, including my hometown of Hamilton,” he wrote.
“It has been especially rewarding to see the industry unite with focus and determination. In the face of global uncertainty, we are not standing still.”
He said after he steps down the “talented and dedicated team at the CISC and our board of directors will continue to advance the association’s core initiatives and deliver results for the betterment of the steel construction industry.
“I fully intend to be the Canadian steel industry’s biggest champion as the ‘Mayor of Steeltown.’”
Loomis was appointed CISC president and chief executive officer in June 2024.
