Project update: CertainTeed’s Antrim gypsum project completes new phase

HALIFAX — Following environmental assessment approval from the Nova Scotia Department of Environment and Climate Change in October 2024, CertainTeed completed a new phase this past summer that will allow the company to provide information for the permitting and detailed design of the Antrim Gypsum Project.

With construction aimed to start in 2026, the company states the Antrim Gypsum Project will source natural gypsum material locally to supply the eastern Canadian and northeast American markets.

The project will be a mining site located approximately 50 kilometres from Halifax, near Gays River, along Lake Egmont Road in the community of Cooks Brook, N.S.

It will feature an open-pit quarry utilizing surface miner machines for efficient extraction and include a rock processing plant equipped with machinery and water management infrastructure, states the project website.

The Antrim mine will produce high purity gypsum at an estimated average rate of production of 1.5 million tonnes per year for wallboard and cement production.

The material will then be transported via trucks to an existing port facility in Sheet Harbour, N.S.

The life of the project is proposed to be 20 years.
