MISSISSAUGA, ONT. – Crews have wrapped up putting the finishing touches on the new QEW highway underpass in Mississauga south.
Since Dec. 19 the underpass has been open to northbound traffic along Hurontario underneath the highway.
According to Metrolinx, the concrete underpass was built and pushed into place using hydraulic rods in a construction method known as “box-jacking.”
This was the first time this was carried out in Ontario.
Otherwise known as the “QEW Push Box,” the new highway underpass was designed and constructed to make room for the construction of the Hazel McCallion LRT guideway.
“With northbound traffic now permanently diverted through the Push Box, the lanes that were originally dedicated to northbound traffic will support the movement of the future light rail vehicles (LRVs) underneath the highway,” the release adds.
