EDMONTON – With age taking its toll on the University of Alberta’s iconic Butterdome, the Alberta government has announced it is providing a $27-million grant to .

Also known as the Universiade Pavilion, the dome is a 64,000-square-foot multi-purpose indoor complex that houses a seven-lane, 200 metre track, long jump and pole vaulting areas, an indoor soccer field, four basketball courts, four volleyball courts, four tennis courts, four badminton courts, a two-level bleacher seating with 5,500 capacity, locker rooms and multi-purpose spaces.

It is commonly referred to as the Butterdome because of its yellow colour and shape.

Beginning this spring, renovations will replace the aging building exterior and roof to address safety issues from ice and snow, improve lighting and pedestrian safety as well as enhance energy performance, a release notes.

The University of Alberta’s new design will incorporate the trademark yellow, infused with shades of green, consistent with the university’s official colours. Its design will also take inspiration from the North Saskatchewan River, which the campus overlooks. The distinctive shape of the river will be incorporated lengthwise across one panel, a symbol of the university as a place of connection, convergence and community. °µÍø½ûÇøion is anticipated to be completed by fall 2027.

Originally built for the 1983 Universiade Games, the facility welcomed more than 2,000 athletes from around the world. For more than 40 years, the pavilion has hosted many sporting events, craft shows, ceremonies and career fairs, the release adds.
