NEW TECUMSETH, ONT. — The Ontario government has officially broken ground on the redevelopment of the Stevenson Memorial Hospital.
Pomerleau Inc. was awarded the $174 million contract for phase one of the project in February. Infrastructure Ontario and Stevenson Memorial Hospital selected Pomerleau Inc. following extensive evaluations through a procurement process that began in August 2024.
The work includes new and expanded acute care areas, the construction of a new, three-storey building that will more than double the size of the hospital to approximately 147,100 square feet and increasing inpatient bed capacity by 20 per cent, a release reads.
Once phase one of the hospital’s redevelopment is completed, the expanded hospital feature:
Space to accommodate nine new inpatient beds at the hospital, increasing the total number of beds from 38 to up to 47.
A new emergency department that is triple the size of the current department.
Expanded diagnostic and surgical services.
A brand-new birthing suite.
In 2025-26, the hospital is receiving $434,000 through the Health Infrastructure Renewal Fund, including $205,000 in one-time funding as an Exceptional Circumstance Project Grant, to support the critical infrastructure needs of the hospital.
Stevenson Memorial Hospital opened its doors for the first time on June 30, 1928, but what exists today is its second hospital structure, which was built in 1964.
The 1964 design was intended to manage 7,000 visits per year, but now there’s almost 40,000 visits annually.
The redevelopment is slated to be complete by 2028.
